Corona virus COVID-19 and our academy

PSA:

With the fear of the Coronavirus threat we are taking extra measures to keep the academy sanitized (more than normal) for all students and visitors. I am treating all areas with disinfectant regularly.

As the situation changes, so will our policies, but for now it is very safe to be in public.

I ask that all students and visitors who have a fever, symptoms of a respiratory infection, or have been exposed to a person with a coronavirus, the flu or any other diseases to stay home until symptoms have passed.

Classes will continue as normal and we ask that you do your part by washing your hands before class, after class, showering, keeping finger and toe nails clipped and clean, gi’s and undergarments washed, hair washed, and your flip flops/shoes sanitized. Please use the disinfectant wipes.

As long as we stay vigilant about the situation and do our part we can all continue on with our daily routines without any disruptions. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

 If you are currently training and for whatever reason need or decide to sit out the virus, I completely understand. I ask you to continue your payments and contact me so we can have a gym left when the virus is done. I will be more than happy to compensate you with private classes etc to make up for lost training time, but we will need an academy at the end of it. Thank you for your understanding.

What to Expect as a BJJ beginner

Alright! you made the decision to change your life the minute you stepped on the mat congratulations your first few days made me a little overwhelming!

Just like it was whenever you first learned how to ride a bike it was awkward. You fell off, got back on and sometimes, you even scraped your knee. It’s a new activity and just like anything new, there will be a learning curve and an adaptation period.

Your abs will burn, your heart rate will be jacked, and you’ll sweat like nobody’s business. All of this is perfectly normal. That’s probably why you started; to get your butt in gear!

Here are a few things you need to remember while experiencing that first stage of white belt.

BREATHE!!
You are not going to die. (even if you feel like you might)

The most important thing that you need in your muscles while doing an intense workout is oxygen. If you are not breathing, you’re going to fatigue faster, think slower, and cut your reaction time in half.

For whatever reason, people tend to hold their breath when exerting a large amount of energy. This is counterproductive to how your body actually works!

You need oxygen in order to keep those muscles moving and the less that you breathe the faster you die.

IT IS OK TO MESS UP. IT IS OK TO MAKE MISTAKES.  IT’S ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO LEARN!

Look, no one likes to get things wrong. But, in reality, no one gets things right one hundred percent of the time! You have probably messed up at pretty much everything you have ever tried and THAT is why you are better at it now than you were at your first experience.

You MUST mess up in order to see the paths that you are not supposed to go down. Even if your instructor says, “Hey man. Bad things happen when you go down that path.” You’ll still find yourself there. Not because you don’t believe them. You do. You just gotta see it for yourself! The more reps that you get the more chances you have to mess it up, fix it and eventually get it correct.

Look at it this way:

One day your mom tells you to wear your kneepads while you skateboard. You tell her yes but, you know you look like a dork and your friends are probably going to roast you.

So, you took them off as soon as you got outside. Shortly afterwards, you’re trying to do a cool trick and busted your knee wide open. Guess you learn to keep your damn knee pads on till you can do the trick correctly.

You are not winning or losing when you’re training. You are training Jiu Jitsu

This is an important one! If you can change the outlook of your training you will get more out of it.

It’s kind of a hard one to understand because, in the beginning, you literally are fighting to survive sometimes.

Don’t think that you’re winning or losing just because you got smashed or you beat up a white belt. You don’t win until you go to a tournament. THEN you win or you lose

Having a learning mindset can you help you excel in this sport more than most things. The right mindset can make a bad day in the practice room a great day for your Jiu Jitsu.

You will not be good in a day.

You will not be good in a week or even a month.

You must be persistent and consistent in training.

It doesn’t mean that you need to train two to three times a day. It doesn’t mean that you need to take the hardest guys in the room every day.

All it means is that you need to become consistent. The more consistent that you are at training, the more consistent your lifestyle will become.

You want to do better in training, so you’ll check your diet. You want to be better in training so you’ll check your sleep pattern and quit staying up too late. You want to be better and continuing your training in jiu jitsu because it makes you a better human.

The difference between white belt and black is vast. The most glaring difference is most likely time.

You’re doing an awesome job. Keep training. You’ll be kicking ass in no time!

Fight 2 Win Denver

We attended Fight 2 Win this past weekend and though Lester had to move up to super heavy weight due to combined weight classes, he managed to go 3 – 1 only losing to an opponent with 70(!) pounds on him. A hard fought third place was his reward.

Our kids program had two competitors but with large kids divisions and excellent opponents our girls managed to win some and lose some but they did not manage to place. Next time we will bring a bigger team, but I am already so proud of everyone going out there and representing our team, our gym our teachings. Thanks and congratulations for stepping up.

February changes

Small changes for February:

Sunday class added to be taught by Gregory Wilson

Kid’s class – I am making 1 kids class again. The 2 kids classes were unnecessarily splitting kids up and were too much for the kids who did both. So, now I will start my kids class at 5:00 and go to about 6:15. I will still be open at 4:30 for kids to come in early and play around, get changed, do their cartwheels, run, do some homework (??) etc.

Still looking to add a kickboxing class – we have awesome kicking pads courtesy of Lester Gherardini but I cannot spread myself too thin or everything else will suffer so I am looking for someone who can teach that.

We have grown a LOT this month and that is incredibly encouraging to me. Thank you all enthusiastic new members, it means a lot to me when I see you go out and purchase Gi’s etc on your own because it tells me that I am doing a good job in spreading the thing I love.

Throw of the week

Every week, we work on one judo throw for our BJJ and MMA skills in addition to the regular wrestling we do. Especially in the Gi, takedowns are varied and difficult to get right because they require precise timing, recognizing the opportunity and the right knowledge. Every week we focus on one throw and drill it in various set ups and scenarios so we gain a decent understanding of it.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is growing

Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is growing rapidly! Not only are we getting more new friends in our team, everyone’s knowledge of BJJ is rapidly growing too. New people help us all learn. Everyone is doing a great job helping the newer students learn and retain information and our teachings and training is getting to be very effective! I notice a lot of progress in the areas we have been focusing on for everyone old and new. I am so happy to see everyone stick around and work hard and enjoy themselves. We are busy building a great team!
